Panel focuses on topics key to females
A community-based volunteer group dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls will feature key female legislators at a panel discussion next week.
Soroptimist International of Waikiki Foundation Inc. President Carol Marx will moderate the discussion Tuesday featuring Sen. Suzanne Chun Oakland (D, Downtown-Nuuanu-Liliha), chairwoman of the Senate Human Services Committee; Sen. Jill Tokuda (D, Kailua-Kaneohe), chairwoman of the Senate Education Committee; and Rep. Della Au Belatti (D, Moiliili-Makiki-Tantalus), chairwoman of the House Health Committee.
Bills relating to women and girls that passed in the 2014 legislative session, as well as other emerging issues, will be discussed at the meeting.
The Soroptimist International mission is to foster programs that lead to social and economic empowerment. The worldwide group values gender equality, empowerment, education and diversity.
The panel discussion with legislators kicks off at noon Tuesday at The Pacific Club in Honolulu and is open to the public. Tickets are $26 and include lunch. To attend, email Judy Lee at siwijudy@gmail.com before 10 a.m. Friday.
Workshops to address chronic illness
Maui County will offer the Better Choices, Better Health workshop series on Molokai for six consecutive Thursdays beginning June 19.
The workshops will be run from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Alu Like’s Kulana ‘Oiwi Multicultural Center in Kaunakakai.
Better Choices, Better Health is an educational program created by Stanford University and monitored by the University of Hawaii to help people manage chronic conditions as well as overall health.
Participants receive a book, “Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Conditions,” and a relaxation CD titled “Time for Healing.”
Cost is $10 for individuals age 60 and older and for caregivers of any age. The cost for those under 60 years is $35; scholarships are available.

Kauai offers summer kids’ enrichment
Registration for Kauai County’s Summer Enrichment Program starts at 8 a.m. Thursday on the website www.kauai.gov.
The session runs for six weeks, June 16 to July 25, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. The Fourth of July holiday will be observed.
The program is open to children ages 5 to 11.
Program sites include Kilauea, Kapaa, Lihue, Kalaheo, Hanapepe and Kekaha neighborhood centers as well as King Kaumualii, Koloa and Wilcox elementary schools.
The fee for one child is $79.74, including processing fee.
