Hawaii News Now will not contest Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s renewal of the local television rights contract for University of Hawaii sports, general manager Rick Blangiardi said.
Blangiardi had earlier vowed to fight to overturn the six-year extension that was announced in March.
But this week Blangiardi said, "We’re not going to pursue any legal action against the university. That said, we remain bitterly disappointed and, quite honestly, unforgiving toward the actions of those two men, Tom Apple and Ben Jay."
Apple, the Manoa Chancellor, and Jay, the athletic director, oversaw the negotiations for the contract extension.
Blangiardi said, "We don’t have a beef with Oceanic, they did what they needed to do. It was the way the guys at UH (acted)."
The agreement runs through June 30, 2020. Oceanic will pay UH $2.3 million initially in a deal that escalates to $2,539,386 at the contract’s end. Oceanic will show a minimum of 60 events per year, according to terms of the agreement.
In other news, Oceanic has retained the rights to football coach Norm Chow’s show, "Inside Access," for its third season. Terms were not disclosed.
