Not ready to take a knee on his football career, former University of Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz has reached agreement on a two-year contract with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.
"I’m not ready to give up my dream," said Moniz, who has not played since suffering a knee injury in July 2012 while playing for the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League.
Moniz is a Leilehua High graduate who joined the Rainbow Warriors as a walk-on in January 2009 after spending a year at Fresno City College. He eventually earned a scholarship and starting job. Moniz tied an NCAA record when he threw seven scoring passes in the first half of a rout against UC Davis in 2011. But later that year, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury.
Moniz’s AFL career ended when he suffered a torn MCL and patella in his left knee. He was not medically cleared to practice until this year.
Two weeks ago, he participated in the Stampeders’ tryout in Bradenton, Fla. Last week, Moniz and former UH receiver Chad Owens worked out in Manoa. On Thursday, Moniz received the offer from Calgary.
"I wasn’t satisfied with my (post-UH) career, and I wanted to keep going," Moniz said. "I wanted to teach my kids not to give up."
Moniz and his girlfriend Kiley Kealoha have a 6-year-old daughter Cali and 21-month-old son Kash.
Two former UH recruits — Drew Tate, who played at Iowa, and Bo Levi Mitchell, who committed to UH before signing with SMU — are on the Stampeders’ roster.
