Alleged theft of copper thwarted
An alert state Department of Transportation employee foiled an apparent copper theft attempt Wednesday in Halawa, police said.
The 56-year-old man called police and reported two men who appeared to be trying to steal copper wiring below the H-3 freeway at about 11:10 a.m., police said.
Officers arrested two men, ages 29 and 48, for investigation of attempted second-degree theft.
The men were released pending investigation.
Man investigated in burglary, threats
A 58-year-old McCully man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly entered a neighbor’s home Thursday night and threatened two men with a dangerous instrument, police said.
Officers arrested the man at his Young Street home for investigation of first-degree burglary and two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening.
Man arrested in stabbings
Hawaii County police arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the stabbings of three people in Hilo early Friday.
Officers responding to a call arrived at 12:02 a.m. at a Keawe Street bar and found a 28-year-old Pahoa man and a 27-year-old Hilo woman with stab wounds.
The suspect fled on foot after damaging a car, police said.
Moments later, police said, a 49-year-old man was stabbed multiple times at a home on the 300 block of Ohai Street in Wainaku.
Officers began searching for the suspect, an acquaintance of the Ohai Street victim, and located him at a Hilo home at 7:36 a.m.
Police said the Pahoa man was in critical condition at the Hilo Medical Center. The Wainaku man was in stable condition, and the woman was treated for her injuries and released.
