Cooper earns All-Big West accolades
Hawaii right-hander Matt Cooper became the first Rainbow Warriors baseball player to earn all-conference honors in the Big West when he was named to the second team on Tuesday.
Cooper, who went 6-5 with a 1.60 ERA in 15 starts, was 3-4 with a 1.93 ERA in eight conference outings, winning half of Hawaii’s games.
Cooper became the 14th UH pitcher to strike out 100 in a season, finishing with 106 in 1062⁄3 innings. His 1.60 ERA is the fourth-best mark among starting pitchers in school history.
He’s the first Hawaii player named to the first or second team in the Big West since UH joined the league in 2013.
Senior Marc Flores, who hit .305 for the season and tied for fourth in the league with five home runs, earned honorable mention honors along with junior outfielder Kaeo Aliviado, who led the team with a .310 average.
Hawaii finished the season 22-31 overall and 6-18 in conference play.
Waiakea’s Medeiros wins Gatorade award
Waiakea senior Kodi Medeiros was named the Gatorade Hawaii Baseball Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Medeiros, a 6-foot-1 left-hander, went 7-1 with a 0.97 ERA with 83 strikeouts against 11 walks in 431⁄3 innings this season. He also hit .486 with a home run while helping the Warriors win the Big Island Interscholastic Federation championship.
Medeiros signed with Pepperdine, but is projected to be selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June.
UH in sixth place at sailing nationals
The Hawaii women’s sailing team ended the first day of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Championships in sixth place in its semifinal bracket in Annapolis, Md.
UH finished the day with 78 total points in the Western semifinal. Yale leads the bracket with 41 points. The semifinals conclude Wednesday with the top nine finishers out of 14 schools in the bracket advancing to the finals, which begin Thursday at the U.S. Naval Academy.
UH’s team of Madeline Kennedy and Katrina Berry posted top-three finishes in three of their six races in the A division to end the first day of competition with 34 points. Cecilia Jansson, Annie Kelly and Louise Curry tallied 44 points in the B division.
Moore advances to quarterfinals in Fiji
Carissa Moore won a matchup of Hawaii surfers to advance to the quarterfinals of the Fiji Women’s Pro on Wednesday in Tavarua, Fiji.
Moore, the two-time ASP world champion and current world No. 1, finished second in her third-round heat behind Australia’s Dimity Stoyle and moved on to the quarterfinals by posting 17.07 points to Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb’s 15.13 in the fourth round.
"I’m super relieved to get through that heat this afternoon as Tatiana was on fire," Moore said. "We had great waves for our heat, a little windy but plenty of sets. It’s a challenging wave and I was doing my best to stick and move on my maneuvers."
Hawaii’s Alessa Quizon lost to Bianca Buitendag 16.90 to 14.84 in the fourth round and was eliminated.
Malia Manuel finished second in her third-round heat and is slated to face Paige Hareb of New Zealand in the fourth round.
