Rags gain new life at Boro Festival
TEMARI will present a free Boro Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Honolulu Museum of Art School at Linekona, 1111 Victoria St.
"Boro" is Japanese for rags. During hard economic times, when materials were hard to come by, boro was not thrown away but remade into bedcovers, backpack straps, slippers and other items for the home, farm or family business.
Artists have resurrected boro traditions using dyeing and sewing techniques to transform remnants into things once again precious, functional, beautiful and valuable.
In spring the Wall Street Journal Weekend magazine featured a Louis Vuitton jacket for $6,100 based on boro patchwork.
Textile talks during the festival are:
"Old Folk Boro," with Linda Ryan, 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
"Sashiko Stitching," with June Hirano, 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Talk-story demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. include themes such as "Rag Weaving: Nuno Zori," by Hui o Laulima; "Nouveau Sashiko," with June Hirano; "Boro+Denim," with Rene Tomita; "Old+New Sashiko," with Lorraine Tokuyama; "Kimono Silks Remade," with Les Kozuki; and more.
The museum’s curator of textiles, Sara Oka, will lead a guided tour of the exhibition, "Remaining Remnants."

Sewapalooza tests embroidery skills
Bernina of America will host Sewapalooza, an embroidery and quilting workshop running 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 14 at US Sewing & Vacuum, 670 Auahi St.
Bernina educator Christine Gist will lead attendees through four projects utilizing Bernina Embroidery Software 7. The event costs $89.95 and includes all supplies, lunch, door prizes and a CD featuring project instructions.

Chef shares secrets of clean, green life
Organic chef and green-living advocate Andrea Devon Bertoli will share her recipes for homemade cleaning and beauty products during a one-hour "Green Clean and Organic Beauty" workshop at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mililani Public Library.
Bertoli will discuss toxins that are found in everyday products and offer healthier alternatives. The program will include a question-and-answer session and is suitable for ages 12 and older.

Kahala Mall’s daylong "Buy & Fly" event takes off Sunday, with food and entertainment in addition to shopping bonuses.
Shoppers will be treated to food-tasting stations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. by Whole Foods Market, Jamba Juice, Il Gelato, California Pizza Kitchen, The Counter, GRYLT, Chili’s, Pizza Hut, The Cookie Corner and more. Mountain Apple Co. artists will perform from 11 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m.

Louis Vuitton has introduced an exclusive, limited-edition resort tote for summer travels.
