Veteran paddler and coach Derek Leeloy has spent the past 41 years in and around canoes. It’s a figure he "can’t believe" because the experience has been "just play" rather than a workout.
After moving to Haleiwa from Kaneohe a few years ago, Leeloy joined Manu O Ke Kai, one of the area’s consistently top-performing canoe clubs. The 55-year-old was immediately welcomed to the club’s men’s 50-and-older crew, which has made winning commonplace at weekly regattas.
The senior masters crew finished second to Lanikai at last year’s Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association state championship regatta in Hanalei Bay, Kauai, after going through the Na ‘Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a season undefeated. With a win at Sunday’s Hui Wa‘a Kalihi Kai Regatta, the crew made it three victories in as many attempts in its quest for state championship gold later this summer.
"Definitely, we’ve been training hard and we’re off to a good start," said Leeloy when asked if last year’s state runner-up finish serves as motivation for his crew this season. "There’s still a long season left to go, and we all know that we have to continue putting in the training. I’m honored to be with this great group of watermen."
The victorious crew also included Sam Alama, Leleo Kinimaka, Greg Pavao, Thomas Schlotman and DJ Oga: a collection of veteran paddlers hailing from as far away as Waimanalo and Makaha as well as nearby North Shore communities. Leeloy explains that the crew trains once a week together in the same canoe and once more individually in one-man canoes — a practice that has become increasingly popular throughout the sport as paddlers try to accommodate varying schedules.
On Sunday, the undefeated crew proved that the training continues to pay off and dominated the 1⁄2-mile course in 3 minutes, 42.15 seconds — nearly 30 seconds ahead of runner-up I Mua.
"We had a good start," Alama said of his team, which made it into and out of the ¼-mile turn before then-closest competitor Kaneohe reached the turning flag. "We had a very good turn and from there we were on our way home. We try to train alongside our (younger) men’s crews, and they’ve taken us to new heights."
Na Keiki O Ka Mo‘i won six of the day’s first 20 races and its paddlers continued to gather points consistently throughout the day as the club notched its third overall victory in as many tries this season.
The Waianae-based club amassed 85 points on eight total race victories to lead the AAA division (25-39 crews entered), while Manu O Ke Kai (68 points), which swept the men’s freshmen, sophomore and senior races, Kaneohe (43 points) and I Mua (41 points) rounded out the large-club standings.
Manu O Ke Kai mounted a promising comeback during which the club won six races in a span of 11 events down the stretch, but Ka Mo‘i’s lead proved insurmountable.
The Waikiki Beach Boys won five races en route to claiming the AA division (13-24 crews entered) title with 45 points. The medium club division also included Ka Mamalahoe (40 points) and Olelo O Keola (22 points).
Waikiki’s "Beach Girls" buoyed the club’s effort and remained undefeated in the marquee sophomore and senior women’s races.
North Shore claimed the A division (6-12 crews entered), amassing 22 points stemming from three race victories, and held off Kamehameha (17 points), Lokahi and Windward Kai (12 points apiece).
Hui Wa‘a heads to Kailua Beach Park for its Windward Kai Regatta on Sunday. The Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association holds its third regatta of the season Sunday with the annual Leeward Kai Father’s Day Regatta at Nanakuli Beach Park. Both races are scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.
