Kodi Medeiros’ road trip that started back on May 27th isn’t over just yet.
The 12th overall pick of the 2014 MLB draft is expected to put pen to paper and officially sign with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday before heading to Milwaukee from Las Vegas for a press conference on Thursday.
Medeiros’ dad, Robert, said Monday the family will fly with him to Milwaukee and take in a game before a planned return to Hawaii on Sunday.
"We’re ready to come home," Robert Medeiros said from Las Vegas, where they are staying with extended family. "It’s been an exhausting trip, but we’re so happy for (Kodi)."
The left-hander, who just graduated from Waiakea High, is expected to receive a signing bonus of at least $2 million but might not get the full $2,805,700 that is the slot value for the 12th overall pick.
The Brewers have already signed high school shortstop Jacob Gatewood, the 41st overall selection, and high school outfielder Monte Harrison, the 50th overall pick.
According to Baseball America, Harrison signed for $1.8 million, or $700,000 above slot value, while Gatewood inked a $1.83 million dollar bonus.
Milwaukee’s total bonus pool is $7,605,600 and signing Medeiros at slot value would take up 85 percent of the money the team has to sign all of its picks in the first 10 rounds.
Medeiros is the second-highest draft pick ever from Hawaii, trailing Punahou’s Justin Wayne, who was the fifth overall pick of the 2000 draft by the Montreal Expos and received a signing bonus of $2,950,000.
Fellow Big Island product Kolten Wong received a $1.3 million signing bonus in 2011 when he was selected No. 22 overall by the Cardinals.
Drafted players have until July 18 to sign with their professional clubs.
