Warriors take prep surf title in California
The Kamehameha surf team won its first-ever national championship, ending San Clemente (Calif.) High School’s four-year reign as National Scholastic Surfing Association team champion Sunday in Dana Point, Calif.
Kamehameha posted 110 points to edge San Clemente (107) in 2- to 4-foot surf at Salt Creek Beach. Huntington Beach (Calif.) High was third in the two-day 16-team competition with 100 points.
Tied at 96 points going into the final round, the Warriors clinched the title by capturing titles in two of the three high school divisions.
Kamehameha-Maui’s Imaikalani Devault came back to top San Clemente’s Kei Kobayashi in the men’s shortboard division and Kamehameha’s Cayla Moore defeated Maddie Peterson of St. Augustine Prep (N.J.) to win the women’s shortboard division, with teammate Kealohi Sabate placing fifth.
