Helicopter makes hard landing on Maui
A Sunshine Helicopters aircraft made a hard landing Tuesday morning in a pasture near Waihee, Maui, but an Illinois couple, their four teenage daughters and the pilot were not injured, Maui fire officials said.
The incident occurred at about 10 a.m.
Firefighters responding to a 9:51 a.m. alarm to the Kapuna area north of Waihee Stream said the pilot and passengers didn’t need medical attention.
The pilot said he experienced mechanical problems and was forced to land.
Moped driver in hospital after accident
A 51-year-old Wailuku man remained hospitalized after he lost control of the moped he was driving Monday and struck the back of a sport utility vehicle on South Kihei Road.
Maui police said the moped driver was taken in critical condition with life-threatening injuries to Maui Memorial Medical Center following the 7:38 p.m. incident. The driver of the 2013 SUV, a 36-year-old man from Honolulu, was not injured.
The accident occurred on South Kihei Road near Alanui Ke Alii Drive.
Police said the moped driver was heading south when he hit the back of the Nissan SUV.
The moped driver was not wearing a helmet.
Molokai man dies a month after crash
An 86-year-old Molokai man died June 4 from injuries sustained in a May 8 single-vehicle crash in Maunaloa, Molokai.
Maui County police identified the man as Harry Shimizu.
Shimizu was a passenger in a 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, driven by an 86-year-old Molokai woman, when it was traveling east on Maunaloa Highway at 6:39 a.m. May 8 just east of mile post 15.
The truck veered left of the centerline and hit a guardrail on the north side of the roadway. It then crossed the centerline and continued southeasterly to the south shoulder, went up an embankment and flipped onto its roof, police said.
Police said Shimizu was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.
