Charge filed in murder attempt
City prosecutors Thursday charged a 55-year-old man with attempting to kill a 65-year-old woman by attempting to strangle her in her Kailua home.
In addition to attempted second-degree murder, Darryl Thomas was charged with violating a temporary restraining order and first-degree terroristic threatening.
Thomas is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
Police said Thomas allegedly forced his way into the woman’s home at 12:21 a.m. Wednesday and "restricted her airway while she was asleep."
The suspect, who did not list a home address, was arrested three hours after the alleged assault, which police said occurred on Old Kalanianaole Road.
Police said the suspect and victim knew each other and that the suspect may have worked for the victim in the past.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified an 80-year-old woman who was found in the water off the Outrigger Club on Tuesday as Joan Crowder of Cambria, Calif.
The cause of death is pending further tests.
An ambulance took Crowder to a hospital after she was discovered in the ocean near the Outrigger Canoe Club at about 6 p.m. Tuesday.
A Fire Department spokesman said people at the Outrigger Canoe Club and a lifeguard pulled her from the water fronting Michel’s restaurant and tried to revive her using a portable defibrillator.
Police said Crowder died at the hospital.
