Crash victim is identified as Kalaheo man
Kauai police identified a 55-year-old county worker killed Thursday morning in a crash involving a semitruck as Severino Butay of Kalaheo.
Police said Butay was with two other men near Eleele, next to a trailer attached to a county pickup truck, when a semitruck heading west on the highway struck the trailer at 9:30 a.m.
Police said the three men were believed to be repairing a tire on the trailer on the shoulder of Kaumualii Highway.
The truck driver had attempted to stop abruptly due to traffic when the vehicle veered off the road and struck the trailer, injuring the three men, police said.
The other two men were taken to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver was not injured, police said.
The highway was closed for four hours in both directions while police conducted an investigation.
