Search continues for missing diver
Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department and city Ocean Safety crews resumed the search for a free-diver who disappeared off Kaena Point on Saturday.
Nicholas Spotkaeff, 56, was last seen by his son swimming about 100 yards north of Kaena Point at 2:44 p.m.
Rescuers conducted land, sea and air searches Saturday afternoon but could not locate the missing man. A diving float and spear believed to belong to Spotkaeff were recovered in the ocean near Kaena Point.
Coast Guard personnel continued to search the ocean overnight, and the full search resumed early Sunday morning. Spotkaeff was last seen wearing green shorts. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact Coast Guard Sector Honolulu at 842-2600.
Cause of death pending in 3 cases
A man whose body was found in Waikele Stream in Waipahu on June 16 has been identified as Seiji Yoshida of Waipahu, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.
The office said Sunday the cause of Yoshida’s death has yet to be determined.
The office has not released the identity of another man whose body was discovered just before 8 p.m. June 16 near the University of Hawaii faculty housing on Dole Street.
The office is still trying to notify the next of kin.
The cause of death in that case is also listed as yet to be determined.
Authorities also are trying to determine the identity of a man in his 50s who died Wednesday morning in shallow water near the Diamond Head area of Waikiki Beach.
A Honolulu Fire Department official said a surfer reported finding the victim at 6:07 a.m. in 2 feet of water off a portion of Waikiki Beach fronted by residential homes.
Paramedics responded to the area at the Diamond Head end of Kalakaua Avenue and pronounced the victim dead at the scene at 6:19 a.m. The cause of death has not yet been determined, according to the medical examiner.
