Ho rules 6-Star ASP contest in Mexico
Coco Ho took home first place in 4- to 6-foot waves at the Association of Surfing Professionals’ 6-Star Los Cabos Open of Surf in Los Cabos, Mexico.
The top seed in the event and ranked No. 10 in the latest Women’s World Championship Tour ranking, Ho defeated Australia’s Dimity Stoyle 18.13 to 8.77 in the semifinals to set up an all-Hawaii final against Brianna Cope. Ho then outlasted Cope 17.10 to 11.60 in the final for the win.
"You’ve got to keep your head up, and my Dad told me at the start of the year that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. This is definitely a nice feeling," Ho said.
Cope made her first career final at an ASP event after her semifinal victory over Australia’s Laura Enever, 12.60 to 10.10.
Bourne earns beach gold medal
Aiea’s Tri Bourne partnered with John Hyden of Florida to win their first World Tour beach volleyball gold medal on Sunday, defeating compatriots and fellow qualifiers Ryan Doherty and John Lucena 21-17, 21-11 in an all-American final at the FIVB Berlin Grand Slam in Germany.
Both teams came out of the qualification tournament. Bourne (Academy of the Pacific, USC) and Hyden did not drop a match.
It was the first time in FIVB history that two qualifying teams made it to the gold-medal match of a Grand Slam.
In Sunday’s semifinals, Hyden and Bourne defeated Brazil’s No. 11 Emanuel Rego and Pedro Salgado 21-16, 21-13. Doherty and Lucena advanced after defeating Brazil’s No. 12 Bruno Oscar Schmidt and Alison Cerutti 21-15, 21-18, 15-11.
The next stop on the 2014 Grand Slam World Tour is in Stavanger, Norway, on Tuesday through Saturday.
