NCAA Summer League starts Saturday
The NCAA Summer Basketball League will start Saturday at Manoa Recreation Center. The league features current and former collegiate players such as Derrick Low, Julian Sensley, Miah Ostrowski, Bill Amis and Christian Stanhardinger.
Games will be played Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 6 and 7:30 p.m. The league’s championship game is scheduled for Aug. 9. Admission is free.
U.S. men make World League final round
The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team, with two players from Hawaii in the starting lineup, rallied past host Russia in five sets in Friday’s World League group match in Kaliningrad.
Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha, USC) and libero Erik Shoji (Punahou, Stanford) helped the U.S. run its record to 8-1 with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-27, 19-25, 21-19 victory over Russia (4-5) in front of 7,000 fans. The win qualifies the Americans for the World League’s final round next month in Italy.
Christenson finished with 34 assists and added a block. Shoji had a match-high 16 digs.
Shoji’s older brother, Kawika (‘Iolani, Stanford), did not play.
The teams meet again Saturday. The U.S. finishes group play with two matches against Serbia next Friday and Sunday.
