Moore into surfing Hall of Fame
Two-time world champion Carissa Moore will be inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame on July 25 in a special ceremony that avoids a competition conflict.
Moore is scheduled to be competing in the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing on Aug. 1, the date set for the induction in Huntington Beach, Calif., which is also the competition site. Organizers decided to move up her ceremony by a week "because we wanted to ensure that she could enjoy her own induction ceremony along with family, friends and sponsors without worrying about rushing off to the competition," hall founder Aaron Pai said.
The Class of 2014 includes Timmy Turner and Rusty Preisendorfer.
The 22-year-old Moore won four National Scholastic Surfing Association open division women’s titles, the first when she was 12. She became the most decorated surfer in NSSA history with 11 national titles.
Moore also won ASP world titles in 2011 and 2013, and two U.S. Open Championships in 2010 and 2013.
Meister advances in South Africa
Hawaii’s Torrey Meister posted a 15.76 two-wave score to win his opening-day heat Monday at the Association of Surfing Professionals Mr. Price Pro Ballito at KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Granger Larsen (11.17) qualified second in his heat, while fellow Hawaii surfers Keanu Asing, Sebastian Zietz, Mason Ho and wild-card entry Fred Patacchia failed to make it out of their heats in the prime-rated event.
Event organizers called the event due to adverse conditions in the afternoon, with local surfers Gavin Gillette and Kiron Jabour yet to surf their opening-round heats.
The 96-man field of Qualifying Series surfers are gunning to make it to next year’s ASP World Championship Tour.
