Owens wins weekly CFL honor
Former University of Hawaii standout Chad Owens was named the CFL Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in the Toronto Argonauts’ season opener.
The Roosevelt graduate returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown in Toronto’s 45-21 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on June 26. Owens also led the Argonauts with eight receptions for 78 yards.
The Argonauts also announced on Monday that Owens’ contract with the team had been extended through the 2015 season. Owens led the CFL with 2,298 combined yards and 94 receptions last year.
UH tops Big West in All-Academic honors
Hawaii placed 56 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big West Conference teams for the winter and spring seasons, tying UC Davis for most in the nine-school league.
The Rainbow Warriors basketball team had three honorees while the Rainbow Wahine had five, both totals tying for most in the conference in the winter.
UH’s baseball (nine selections), softball (nine) and men’s tennis (six) programsled the Big West in their sports in the spring season. The Rainbow Wahine track and field team had 12 selections.
To be eligible, student-athletes must have attained sophomore standing academically while maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average and competing in at least 50 percent of their teams’ contests.
Niumatalolo to speak at workshop
Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo will be among the featured speakers at a high school football workshop hosted by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association and Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association on July 12 at McKinley High School’s auditorium.
The workshop is open to HHSAA/HIADA member coaches athletic directors, trainers and game officials. Along with Niumatalolo, Bassel Faltas of USA Football and Bob Colgate, the NFHS Football Rules Coordinator, will conduct sessions during the workshop.

Ka Ulukoa rallies for gold medal
Ka Ulukoa’s 14 Open team rallied to win the gold medal Wednesday at the USAV Boys Junior National Championship in Houston.
The Hawaii team went 9-0, capping its undefeated run with a 20-25, 25-14, 18-16 victory over Torimar of Puerto Rico.
Ka Ulukoa trailed by as much as 11-7 in Set 3, but tied it at 12 with a 5-1 run. It was tied at 16 with Ka Ulukoa ending it with two unanswered points.
Members of the team coached by Diana McKibbin were Destin Takenaka-Amodo, Race Agcaoili, Dru Pang, Kupono Browne, Connor McInerny, Jameson McKibbin, Stephen Wallen; Justin Manson, Ryan Hong, James Scott, Jacob Isaia and Ryan Wilcox. The assistants were Deborann Wilcox and Tony McInerny.
Also competing in the division from Hawaii were Kuikahi (6-5), which tied for fifth, and Outrigger Canoe Club (6-4), which placed ninth.
Paddleboard, SUP races at Turtle Bay
The 36th Hui O He’e Nalu Independence Day paddleboard and SUP races are scheduled for Friday off Turtle Bay.
Organizers have added OC-1 and OC-2 divisions to the long course, with entries limited to the first 50 paddlers in OC-1 and 10 in OC-2. The 7-mile course is from Turtle Bay to Waimea Bay and will have staggered starts beginning at 9:45 a.m.
The long course for prone and SUP starts at 10 a.m.
The short course is from Sunset Beach to Waimea Bay. Staggered starts begin at 11 a.m.

Cash Pot Surf Series at Ala Moana Bowls
The Arnette Eyewear Cash Pot Surf Series, offering a $5,000 purse, returns next Thursday and Friday at Ala Moana Bowls.
There will be two divisions: pro-am and boys 16-under. Competitors can earn money in every heat.
Entry forms are available at Local Motion stores and arnette.com. This is a beach-entry-only event and officials recommend arriving by 6:30 a.m. to register. There is no charge to compete.
Waterman camp coming up in August
The Kainalu Academy Jr. Waterman Ocean EDventure Summer Program, a five-day camp for ages 10-18, is set for Aug. 4-8 and Aug. 11-15 at Turtle Bay Resort.
The camp runs from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and includes ocean safety training and experimental ocean science education classes with watermen Dolan Eversole and Ian Masterson. Among the sports activities offered are swimming, bodysurfing, snorkeling, paddleboarding, canoe paddling, sailing and surfing.
Excursions will include a tour of North Shore surf sites and trips to Waimea Valley and Kahana Bay.
The cost is $800 for the five-day program or $200 per day. The fee includes lunch, snacks, a rash guard and transportation.
