Record try has pilot, 19, in isles
A college student poised to become the youngest person to fly around the world by himself is set to finish his circumnavigation Monday night.
Matt Guthmiller, 19, landed in Hilo on Saturday and is having his plane undergo maintenance in Honolulu before he flies Monday to El Cajon, Calif.
Guthmiller said on his Facebook page that the 16 1⁄2-hour flight from American Samoa to Hawaii was "by far the longest, most challenging flight to date."
The South Dakota teen set off May 27 from California in a 1981 Beechcraft A36 Bonanza.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology sophomore made 20 stops in 13 countries on five continents in an attempt to become the youngest pilot to circle the globe alone.
Guthmiller’s flight will help raise money for Code.org, a nonprofit website that helps teach people about computer coding.
The final legs of his journey can be tracked on Guthmiller’s website, www.limitless-horizons.org.
Woman airlifted off reefed boat by Coast Guard
A 25-year-old woman was flown by helicopter to shore Sunday after the sailboat she was a passenger on became stranded off the east side of Lanai, authorities said.
Two other crew members, both men, were uninjured. One was able to paddle a kayak to shore while the other stayed on the boat, Coast Guard Petty Officer Melissa McKenzie said Sunday.
A salvage crew was expected to reach the stranded crewman by Monday.
Authorities said someone aboard the 38-foot vessel, Raven, called the Coast Guard to report it had run aground near Kaa Fishpond and was taking on water. It was not in danger of sinking.
McKenzie said the woman has a pre-existing medical condition and was airlifted from the boat by a helicopter as a precaution. She was hoisted from the boat just after midnight and flown to Kahului Airport to a waiting emergency medical services crew.

Junior Jorju, 40, was discovered missing at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a spokeswoman for the department. The prison went into lockdown and guards searched the facility.
Jorju was serving 14 days for driving without a license and contempt of court. He started serving his time July 7 and was scheduled to be released Sunday.
Jorju was considered a "community custody" inmate, the lowest risk level. How Jorju escaped is under investigation.
Jorju is 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighs 135 pounds and has brown hair and eyes.
