Fire destroys abandoned Maili house
A Honolulu fire investigator is trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed an abandoned house Saturday in Maili, shortly after witnesses saw someone inside.
Honolulu fire Capt. David Jenkins said firefighters were dispatched to the two-alarm fire on the 87-100 block of Hila Street at 12:29 p.m. They found the home already three-quarters ablaze.
He said about 35 firefighters from eight companies extinguished the fire by 1:17 p.m.
No other buildings were damaged and no one was hurt.
Jenkins said witnesses reported seeing someone inside the single-story structure before the fire started, but no one was found after firefighters arrived.
A damage estimate was unavailable.
Alleged burglars discovered by residents
Police responded to two unrelated home intrusions Friday and Saturday.
A 41-year-old man was charged Friday after police said he broke into a Kahala home and exposed his genitals.
Mark Cloutier, who did not give police an address, was charged at 9 p.m. Friday with first-degree burglary. He remained at the main police station Saturday, unable to post $50,000 bail.
Police said Cloutier entered the home at about 6:30 a.m. Friday and showed his private parts to a 53-year-old woman.
He ran from the home but was found nearby at Kilauea and Waialae avenues and arrested without incident.
In the other case a 42-year-old Haleiwa man returned home at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday and found a woman inside.
Police arrested Keenan A. Cheney, 41, of Haleiwa on Lokoea Place.
Cheney was charged Saturday with first-degree burglary and remained in custody, unable to post $11,000 bail.
