Galdiano tied for second at USGA
Mariel Galdiano of Pearl City is tied for second place after shooting a 3-under 69 at Monday’s first round of the USGA Girls Junior Amateur Championship in Flagstaff, Ariz. Galdiano is three strokes behind leader Angel Yin of Arcadia, Calif., who shot a 6-under 66.
Malia Nam of Kailua shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for 11th. Honolulu’s Rose Huang shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 35th. Allisen Corpuz of Honolulu is tied for 47th after a 3-over 75 and Kapolei’s Alanis Sakuma is tied for 116th with an 8-over 80. Stroke play ends on Tuesday. Match play begins on Wednesday with the top 64 qualifiers. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday.

Honolulu wins Little League 11-12 title
Dante Park struck out nine batters to help Honolulu beat Central Maui 2-0 in Monday’s title game of the Little League 11-12 State Baseball Championship at Barbers Point. Park gave up one hit in the complete-game win. Honolulu scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Honolulu will face Northern California in the West Region Tournament opener on Aug. 1 in San Bernardino, Calif.
Thunder win Cal Ripken regional opener
The Thunder baseball team from Hawaii defeated Richfield (Utah), 17-1, in Monday’s opener of the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional in Long Beach, Calif. DJ Akiyama struck out six batters in three innings and gave up no earned runs. He also had two hits and drove in four runs in the 11U tournament. The Thunder and Da Unit are the Hawaii representatives in the tournament. Pool play continues through Wednesday.
Boxers win at amateur tourney
Four boxers from Boxfit 808 won gold medals at last week’s Desert Showdown World Amateur Boxing Championship in Indio Springs, Calif. Jordan Panthen won the boys 17-18 title at 165 pounds, and Nainoa Perez won the boys 15-16 title at 119. Ryan Hokama was the open division champion at 108. Jazzelle Rabago-Bobadilla won the open title at 110 and took the silver at 114 for girls 15-16. Joricksen Galiza and Jeremy Granston won silver medals.
