A 24-year-old man told police that his girlfriend’s ex-husband hid in her car in Kakaako on Sunday and stabbed him before abducting the woman, holding her captive for 12 hours and sexually assaulting her, according to court documents.

Matthew K. Bright, 27, of Salt Lake is charged with second-degree attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping and first-degree sexual assault. He remains in custody, unable to post $500,000 bail.

According to a police affidavit filed in Honolulu District Court, Bright hid in the back seat of his ex-wife’s car, which was parked at Waterfront Plaza early Sunday morning.

As Bright’s ex-wife and Keone Moore, 24, left the parking lot at 4 a.m. Sunday, Moore noticed Bright in the back seat of the car, according to the affidavit. Moore said Bright began stabbing him as he drove, the affidavit said.

Moore said he got out of the car and flagged down a police officer, saying he had been stabbed and needed help.

An ambulance took Moore to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition with multiple stab wounds, Emergency Medical Services said.

According to the affidavit, Bright followed Moore on foot until he saw the police officer.

Police said Bright then forced his ex-wife into his silver 2003 Jeep Liberty, which was parked near Waterfront Plaza.

While she was being held captive by Bright, the woman made two calls — one to a girlfriend and the other to her brother, the victim told police.

The affidavit said the victim told her girlfriend: "He’s been hitting me. He’s going to kill me. I don’t know where we are." In a cellphone call to her brother, the victim said she wanted to talk to their parents, adding, "He’s going to hurt me if I don’t get off the phone."

The affidavit said the victim was held by the suspect until a police officer found her Sunday at the top of Wilhelmina Rise.

The East Honolulu patrol officer spotted the silver Jeep at 5:33 p.m. in the 5000 block of Maunalani Circle and arrested Bright after a missing-person bulletin had been issued.

The victim told police that she tried to escape at least four times but was prevented when he allegedly choked her with his hands and forearm. The victim also said Bright sexually assaulted her in the car while holding her down by the neck.

A preliminary hearing for Bright is scheduled for Friday in District Court.
