Washington expects to wait until the final week and a half before its Aug. 30 season-opening game with Hawaii to name a starting quarterback in the wake of the suspension of Cyler Miles.
Miles, the only returning UW quarterback who has thrown a pass in a college game, will be held out of the matchup at Aloha Stadium, Huskies’ coach Chris Petersen announced Thursday at Pac-12 Media Days in Hollywood, Calif.
Miles, a sophomore who guided the Huskies to a 69-27 win over Oregon State in 2013 when three-year starter Keith Price was injured, was the projected starter. Overall, Miles played in eight games last season, completing 37 of 61 passes for 418 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He ran for 200 yards on 23 carries.
But he was suspended for spring practice following an incident in February in which wide receiver Demore’ea Stringfellow was charged with misdemeanor assault. Stringfellow has since left the team.
"We’re excited to get (Miles) back with us and let him get in the mix and let him compete," Petersen said on the Pac-12 website. "He just won’t play in the first game."
Petersen said, "Cyler made a mistake and it is part of the follow through to make sure this thing is handled and done correctly."
With Miles out, the Huskies will choose between sophomore Jeff Lindquist and redshirt freshman Troy Williams, who split the work in the spring. K.J. Carta-Samuels is an incoming freshman.
"We’ll have to get all those guys reps and then, when we get closer to game week, a week and a half or so, figure out who is gonna be that guy and get that guy a good amount of work," Petersen said. "But the first three quarters of fall camp they are all gonna have to get work."
