Thunder wins Cal Ripken regional
The Thunder baseball team from Hawaii defeated Oakland (Calif.) 2-1 to win Friday’s 11U championship game of the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional inLong Beach, Calif.
The Thunder now advance to the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen,Md. Tournament play starts on Aug. 8. In an all-Hawaii semifinal on Friday, Thunder beat Da Unit 12-6. Randen Kohagura was the winning pitcher and JaronYoshikane homered and drove in four runs.
» ‘Iolani routed Walker River (Nev.) 15-2 in Friday’s opening round of the 13U Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest Regional in Fowler, Calif. ShaydonKubo went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs in the win. ‘Iolani will play in Sunday’s winners bracket game.
» Laguna (Calif.) eliminated Da Nuts 9-1 in Friday’s semifinal of the 9U Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional in Panguitch, Utah. Da Nuts went 3-1 in the tournament.
» Hilo beat Whittier (Calif.) 7-2 on Friday in the Bronco division of the Pony Baseball West Zone in Whittier. Hilo is 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament.
Hawaii Bowl tickets on sale Monday
Individual tickets for the Hawaii Bowl will go on sale Monday. The ESPN-televised bowl game features teams from the Mountain West and Conference USA, and will be played on Dec. 24 at 3 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.eTicketHawaii.com, by calling 944-2697, or at the Stan Sheriff Center. Aloha Stadium will sell tickets starting Aug. 11.
Movers finish Japan baseball tour
The HawaiiIsland Movers lost at Osaka GakuinUniversity 13-7 in Friday’s finale of its three-week goodwill tour through Japan. Lanson Yamamoto and Edison Sakata each contributed three hits for the Movers.
The Movers begin their homestand against Paradise on Thursday at Hans L’Orange.
