The Kainalu Academy Jr. Waterman Ocean EDventure Summer camp at Turtle Bay Resort is geared toward kids who love the ocean.
Youths ages 10 to 18 are invited to participate in the five-day camp in August featuring expert-led ocean safety training by waterman Dolan Eversole and experiential ocean science education classes by Ian "The Surf Professor" Masterson.
Camp participants will go swimming, bodysurfing, snorkeling, outrigger canoe paddling, stand-up paddling and sailing, as well as take part in excursions to North Shore surf sites, Waimea Valley and Kahana Bay.
Kids will get an introduction to ocean safety and risk assessment as well as ocean science and surf forecasting, coastal environmental issues and Hawaiian ocean history and culture. Development of character and confidence are part of the curriculum.
The camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Aug. 8 and Aug. 11 to 15. Cost is $800 for the five-day program or $200 per day. Cost includes transportation, lunch, snacks and a Kainalu Academy hat and rash guard.
Though all skill levels are welcome, participants must be proficient swimmers and comfortable in the ocean (and pass a 200-yard swimming test on the first day). Turtle Bay Resort is at 57-091 Kamehameha Highway. Reservations required at www.kainalu.co.
