Local-boy actor Anthony Ruivivar has filmed the first of an ongoing story arc that will keep him visible in his hometown during the fifth season of CBS’ "Hawaii Five-0."
Ruivivar, the son of Society of Seven leader-founder Tony Ruivivar, has completed the first of several guest spots on the Hawaii-based procedural he’s contracted to do through August. His debut on the reboot reunites him with Scott Caan, who plays Danny Williams, since they share a shred of history. "We are good friends, having done the movie ‘Speed of Life’ together in New York City in the late 1990s," said Ruivivar. Both were unknowns then.
Ruivivar previously co-starred on NBC’s "Third Watch," and has had lots on his acting plate recently, completing two seasons on Cinemax’s "Banshee," then juggling recurring roles on J.J. Abrams‘ NBC series "Revolution" and the CW’s "Beauty and the Beast." This, while fortifying his own production studio in Burbank called Six01 Studio.
Ruivivar and his family now reside in Los Angeles so he’ll commute from there to here in the weeks ahead. …
CAAN-FIDENTIAL: The aforementioned Caan and girlfriend Kacy Byxbee welcomed their first baby — a daughter — last month. Josie James was born July 9, so named in an apparent nod to grandpa-actor James Caan. Besides "Five-0," "Danno" has committed to replace Shia LeBeouf to co-star in director Barry Levinson‘s "Rock the Kasbah," in which he plays a con man with Danny McBride. They join Bill Murray in a tale set in Kabul, Afghanistan. …
LAVA FLICK: Kuana Torres Kahele and Napua Greig will voice "Uku" and "Lele" — ukulele, get it? — in James Ford Murphy‘s Disney Pixar short "Lava," premiering in August at the Hiroshima Animation Festival.
Murphy two decades ago had the notion to do this seven-minute short while honeymooning on the Big Island. He’s been a Pixar animator since 1998’s "A Bug’s Life." He learned to play ukulele and composed "Lava," the title tune, then asked Kahele and Greig to perform it in the short, which premieres in U.S. theaters in June 2015 in front of a Pixar animated feature, "Inside Out." …
WHEE, THE PEOPLE: Vanita Rae Smith again is honchoing Hawaii’s participation in the fifth annual "Taps Across America" observance, at 5 p.m. Aug. 10 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. Communities across the U.S. will honor the men and women — the ordinary wartime heroes — as part of "Spirit of ’45 Day" observed on the second Sunday of August. The event, established in 2010 in a congressional resolution led by the late Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, reminds the world of the courage of "greatest generation" and their shared sacrifice and commitment to service. Hawaii’s remembrance will focus on the 442nd corner, near the grave of journalist/war correspondent Ernie Pyle, with a performance of the Celtic pipes and drums, a long bugler and guest speaker Penny Dempsey Yazzie, visiting from Las Vegas, representing AWON (the American World War II Orphans Network). The concert will showcase pop, rock and soul. Tickets: $25 general, $45 VIP, available at www.honolulumuseum.org. …
