Manuel in semifinals at US Open of Surfing
Kauai’s Malia Manuel reached the semifinal round of the US Open of Surfing by defeating Australia’s Nikki Van Dijk on Saturday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Manuel faces Tyler Wright of Australia in the semifinals of the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour event. Wright beat Honolulu’s Carissa Moore in Saturday’s quarterfinals to advance, outpointing the two-time world champion 15.93 to 11.93.
In the men’s event, Hawaii’s Keanu Asing fell in the fifth round to South Africa’s Jordy Smith.
North Shore surfer Bailey Nagy won the Women’s Pro Junior event, leading a 1-2-3 finish for Hawaii surfers, with Mahina Maeda taking second and Brianna Cope third. Hawaii’s Joshua Moniz was third in the Men’s Pro Junior event.
Boxers win 4 belts at nationals
Three boxers from PearlSide Boxing Club and one from Honolulu Boxing Club won title belts at the 14th Ringside World Championships, which concluded Saturday in Independence, Mo.
Winning their respective divisions were, from PearlSide: Zachary Jones, junior boys open 15-16 age group, 166-176 pounds; Thalei Kamalani-Manpathoum, girls intermediate novice, 13-14, 120-125; and Allie Mahoe, girls intermediate open, 13-14, 111-114. Abigail Castro, from Honolulu BC, won in the women’s youth novice, 17-18, 153-165.
Mason leads at Hilo golf tournament
Nick Mason carries the lead into Sunday’s final round of the Hilo Invitational Golf tournament after carding a 10-under 61 on Saturday.
Mason had two eagles and seven birdies to take a five-shot lead over Jared Sawada, Max Bonk and JT Hamamoto.
McNamara, Murray to speak at QB club
John McNamara and Steve Murray are the Honolulu Quarterback Club’s guest speakers for Monday’s luncheon.
Murray is an associate editor at Midweek who has been a writer, columnist and editor for the publication, where he began working in 2002. The UH graduate is also co-owner/co-host of "1420 Golf" on KKEA, 1420-AM.
McNamara has been a UH associate athletic director in charge of external affairs at UH since 2004. He is responsible for marketing and promotions, corporate partnerships and media relations for the department.
The event is held at the Maple Garden Restaurant at 909 Isenberg Street. Lunch costs $15 and begins at 11:30 a.m.
