Baltimore man dies after snorkeling
A visitor died Sunday after he ran into trouble while snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.
At about 10:13 a.m. Sunday, lifeguards came to the aid of a 43-year-old man from Baltimore who was snorkeling by himself.
Lifeguards brought him to shore and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived.
He was transported in critical condition to Straub Clinic & Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Capt. James Todd, spokesman of the Honolulu Fire Department, said the visitor was traveling with his wife and was part of a snorkeling tour group but went out again on his own.
Work furlough inmate doesn’t return
Police and sheriffs were looking Sunday for inmate Christopher Robles, who failed to return to the Laumaka Work Furlough Center.
He was supposed to return at 4 p.m. Saturday, the Department of Public Safety said.
Robles, 40, was serving time for burglary.
Robles is 5 feet 2 inches tall and 125 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
Anyone who spots him is asked to call 911.
Car plows into vet clinic, injuring 2 people
Two women were transported to a trauma hospital after a vehicle Sunday rammed through the entrance of a veterinary clinic in Pearl City.
The crash occurred at about 12:23 p.m. at the Newtown Veterinary Clinic on Kuahao Place. Capt. James Todd, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said an elderly woman operating a vehicle accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake.
Todd said the vehicle pinned two women, a receptionist and a technician, who were at the front desk.
The driver was shaken up by the accident but was unhurt, Todd said.
The two clinic employees, ages 28 and 41, went to the hospital in serious condition.
8 saved after vessel sinks off Molokai
Eight people Sunday afternoon were rescued by the Coast Guard after a 21-foot recreational boat sank in the Kaiwi Channel about 12 miles west of Molokai.
The four adults and four children were wearing life jackets, and no injuries were reported, the Coast Guard said.
The group hung onto three kayaks it tied together after the vessel sank.
A helicopter crew from Barbers Point made three trips to the site, transporting victims to Sandy Beach Park, where Honolulu Fire Department crews assisted.
Lt. Jessica Mickelson said the group included experienced watermen who had safety equipment onboard that immediately alerted the Coast Guard.
Officer released in sex assault probe
A Honolulu police officer who was under investigation for an alleged sex assault and kidnapping was released from custody Sunday afternoon.
No charges were filed against officer Nicholas Masagatani, 30. Police arrested Masagatani early Saturday at his Nuuanu home for the alleged offenses.
In December 2011 Masagatani was one of three officers who received the Warrior Gold Medal of Valor, HPD’s highest award, relating to halting a crime spree that April.
The officers were honored for stopping a gunman who fired at them and endangered the public on Kalanianaole Highway, according to the Police Department’s Facebook page.
