Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other peace leaders will encourage Hawaii residents to embrace global peace and justice during a presentation event set for 4 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Hawai‘iConvention Center.
The presentation, "A Just and Inclusive Global Community," will also be offered free to high school students from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 30 at the convention center.
Other participating leaders are Gro Harlem Brundtland, the first female prime minister of Norway, who served as director-general of the World Health Organization, and Hina Jilani, a pioneering lawyer and human rights activist who founded Pakistan’s first all-female law firm and its first legal aid center.
Tutu is a Nobel Peace laureate for his anti-apartheid work in South Africa.
The three are committed to promoting peace and ethical leadership as members of "The Elders," an independent group of global leaders, which also includes former President Jimmy Carter, brought together by the late Nelson Mandela.
The event is sponsored by "Pillars of Peace Hawaii: Building Peace on a Foundation of Aloha," an initiative of the Hawaii Community Foundation, launched in 2012. The initiative’s series of community talks, events and long-term programs aim to serve as a catalyst for better understanding of the roles of compassion, diversity and culture in the practice of peace, a news release said.
Student tickets for the Aug. 31 event are $12; general public tickets are $20, including validated parking. Tickets can be purchased at www.pillarsofpeacehawaii.org.
Both presentations will be held in the convention center’s Lili‘u Theater, 1801 Kalakaua Ave.
