Luxury high-rise condos sprouting in Kakaako, taxing pensions, preschool education, the excise tax surcharge…
Sure, those are among the hot-button topics of the day as voters go to the polls. But what about the compelling issues of the local sports world?
After all, some things are just too important to be left to talk radio and state officials. So, why not a primary election ballot that comes with a sports section so fans could help resolve some other key issues while they are in the voting booth?
Issues such as, well, these:
PROPOSITION A
In honor of 40 years of service and in recognition of the four national championship banners that hang in the rafters, shall the court at the Stan Sheriff Center be named "Dave Shoji Court" for the accomplished Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach, complete with a set of genuine "shoji" doors on the arena?
PROPOSITION B
Should the UH Board of Regents immediately step in and withhold the three-year contract extension and $21,000 annual salary raise for men’s basketball coach Gib Arnold while his program is under cloud of NCAA investigation?
PROPOSITION C
In view of its track record in such searches, shall UH forever be prohibited from assembling any committees to help select future coaches and athletic directors?
PROPOSITION D
Shall Major League Baseball be ordered to cease and desist its five-year television blackout of West Coast teams in Hawaii?
PROPOSITION E
In determining future UH athletic department fiscal bottom lines, shall money brought in from campus parking during sports events and advertising sold at Aloha Stadium be used to mitigate any deficits?
PROPOSITION F
Shall pay-per-view sales of UH road games be abolished?
PROPOSITION G
Shall any replacement for Aloha Stadium be required to have a seating capacity of at least 40,000 as well as provide adequate parking?
PROPOSITION H
In recognition of the state having saved the event, in years in which the Pro Bowl is held in a city other than Honolulu, shall the NFL be required to hold at least one regular-season or exhibition game here?
PROPOSITION I
Should all politicians who sign-wave at Aloha Stadium or who only make appearances at UH events during election years be required to vote for measures that help the school?
