Partially treated sewage enters reservoir
About 10,500 gallons of partially treated sewage was discharged Friday afternoon into Wahiawa Reservoir, the city said.
The city Department of Environmental Services responded to the discharge of partially treated effluent from the Wahiawa Wastewater Treatment Plant that was not disinfected.
The incident was reported at 2:10 p.m.
The ultraviolet disinfection unit lost power for 17 minutes because of a generator failure, the city said in a written news release.
Environmental Services informed the Department of Health, which waived water sampling.
Warning signs were posted at daybreak Saturday at the reservoir.
Searchers find woman’s body
Kauai firefighters Saturday recovered the body of a woman believed to be a missing hiker swept down Hanakoa Stream.
The woman’s body was found around 11:30 a.m. near the Hanakoa shoreline, Kauai officials said. Her identity has not been released.
She was camping with a friend, a 24-year-old man, in Kalalau Valley on Friday when they tried to cross Hanakoa Stream and were swept downstream, officials said. The man made it to shore but could not find the woman, authorities said. He hiked out to call for help.
Firefighters and Air 1 rescue crews searched for the woman until around 6:30 p.m. but suspended efforts due to darkness. Crews resumed searching Saturday morning.
Assault over pot nets year in jail
A Kauai man who assaulted a drug dealer will spend a year in jail and four years of probation under a sentence handed down Thursday in Circuit Court.
Keanu Vance Sims Olival, 22, of Lihue also was sentenced to concurrent terms of nine months for methamphetamine possession and six months for misdemeanor second-degree terroristic threatening.
"I accept that I did wrong and offer no excuses," Olival told the court. "I am sick of this. Drugs have gotten me nowhere."
County Deputy Prosecutor Melinda Mendes said she hopes Olival’s statements about wanting to change his life were sincere. She had sought a sentence of 15 months.
On July 10, 2013, Olival approached a dealer to buy marijuana, according to defense attorney James Tagupa. The dealer refused, a fight broke out and Olival took drugs from the dealer after the fight, Tagupa said.
