Trivia hasn’t been the same since the advent of the Internet. Librarians, bartenders, sports editors and radio producers rejoice that answers to questions like, "Who won the Triple Crown in 1967?" can now be found with a few easy keystrokes instead of a telephone call to an "expert."
But that same access to the answers makes it too easy, right? Makes those of us old enough to have grown up with Trivial Pursuit pining for the days when you really had to know your stuff to earn that wedge of plastic cheese.
Regardless, it’s still fun. And in recognition of this afternoon’s final four of the Ultimate Sports Trivia Challenge today at Dave & Buster’s, courtesy of the folks at 1420-AM and NAPA, here’s some truly trivial local sports trivia — trivial, but challenging.
Watch out for the tricks, there are a few:
1. What do Doug Cosbie, Les Murakami and Michele Nagamine have in common?
2. A Chaminade basketball player who helped beat Virginia and a University of Hawaii baseball pitcher in the 2000s share the same name. What is it?
3. A reporter at a Hawaii newspaper snapped footballs to Matt Leinart and Colt Brennan as their high school teammate. Can you name him?
4. Who is the Hawaii high school girls reigning state track and field champion in the 100-yard dash?
5. Who was teammates with Todd Helton and Michael Jordan?
6. What former University of Hawaii football player has a son who played in the Final Four and another in the NFL?
7. Who won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu wrestling championship in 1982, 167-pound weight class?
8. What college baseball catcher from Hawaii batted .353 with 17 homers and 72 RBIs in 2000?
9. Can you name the UH football staff member who was on the Florida roster when the Warriors played the Gators in 2008?
10. No. 9 was too easy. One of his Florida teammate’s parents met in Hawaii when they were Chaminade students. Name him.
11. Joe Story starred in baseball, football and soccer at Kalani. For which U.S. Olympic team did he serve as captain?
12. How many times was Mike Trapasso drafted? (Don’t worry about Selective Service, he’s a little too young for that and I’m not THAT tricky.)
