Hekili earns bye in Babe Ruth World Series
Hekili bashed Sarasota, Fla., 11-1 in the Babe Ruth World Series in Ocala, Fla., on Tuesday to win its division and earn a bye into the semifinal round.
Tyler Trim and Ryne Oshiro drove in four runs apiece and Trim allowed three hits in four innings.
The Hawaii team plays Thursday and is two wins away from the 14-under championship.
Hawaii surfers win at Billabong Pro Tahiti
John John Florence and Sebastian Zietz dominated their heats in the second round of the Billabong Pro Tahiti on Tuesday.
Florence scored 11 points for his rides, while his opponent, Raoni Monteiro of Brazil, only managed 2.43. Zietz had an even easier time, beating Brazil’s Alejo Muniz 15.80-2. Fredrick Patacchia scored 17.04 points but lost to Spain’s Aritz Aranburu, who compiled 17.46.
Zietz and Florence are the only Hawaii surfers to reach the third round. They will face each other Wednesday with the winner advancing and the loser tying for 13th place.
Shimomura earns trip to Florida
Pearl City’s Kevin Shimomura beat Brandon Nahale, Juan Rodriguez and Jason Jakovic by three strokes at Pearl Country Club to win the National Car Rental Aloha PGA Assistant Championship on Tuesday.
Shimomura will represent Hawaii at the national tournament at Port St. Lucie, Fla., beginning Oct. 30. He posted a 74, with a 34 on the back nine, in the final round for a 148. The Ko Olina assistant pro earned $1,800.
Kim claims Oahu Women’s Invitational
Alice Kim beat Sydney Maluenda by seven Stableford points to take the Oahu Country Club Women’s Invitational on Tuesday.
Kim scored 37 points in Tuesday’s final round with five birdies and an eagle to finish with 75 points. Keilyn Ing and Monica Keo tied for third with 64.
Marty Drew won the net championship on the first hole of a playoff with Jeannie Pak and Royce Sonnenberg. All three scored 77 points in regulation.
Matas, Rolland earn preseason recognition
Hawaii Pacific’s Olivier Rolland and Tyler Matas of Notre Dame de Namur, who prepped at Mililani, were selected the Pacific West Conference’s preseason defenders of the year in men’s soccer on Tuesday.
Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Chris Pineda is the early choice for goalkeeper of the year, Jamie Phillips of Holy Names is the player of the year and Point Loma’s Phil Wolf is the coach of the year.
Azusa Pacific tops the team poll with HPU fourth, BYUH sixth, UH-Hilo ninth and Chaminade last at 13th.
Hawaii players in the preseason all-conference team are Brais Garcia of HPU, Xavier Fuerte of UH Hilo and David Urbana of BYUH.
