Sophomore Jeff Lindquist will start at quarterback for Washington when the Huskies play Hawaii on Aug. 30 in the teams’ season opener.
Washington coach Chris Petersen made the announcement after the team’s practice on Friday.
"Jeff Lindquist will start. We’ll go with him and see how he does," Petersen told the Seattle Times. "He’s done a great job from spring through now."
Neither the 6-foot, 3-inch, 246-pound Lindquist nor his competitor for the starting job in the opener, redshirt freshman Troy Williams, has thrown a pass in a college game.
Washington’s three-year starter, Keith Price, has gone on to the pros and his projected successor, Cyler Miles, is suspended for the season opener.
Petersen told the Times, "I will say this: Troy Williams has done a really nice job, too. And I think we were splitting hairs trying to figure this out. Both have different skill sets they bring to the table, but at this point we feel like we need to give Jeff the nod and let him roll."
The 25th-ranked Huskies are a 151/2 -point favorite on Las Vegas betting lines.
