With two back-breaking drives early in the second half, No. 7 Campbell broke open a close game and soundly defeated Moanalua 34-6 in an OIA Blue Division football game Friday night in Ewa Beach.
Leading just 14-6 after the break, the Sabers (2-0) drove 80 yards for one score and then came right back after an interception by Zibrex Cabel for another TD and had a commanding 27-6 edge at the end of three quarters.
That 15-play, 80-yard drive included 12 running plays and made a huge difference in the outcome. Austin May, who finished with 80 yards rushing, capped it with a 1-yard TD run.
"They (the Sabers) did a great job keeping us off the field in the second half. They wore us down," said Moanalua coach Jason Cauley, whose team fell to 1-1 and appeared to be a on a mission after an upset of Waianae last week but instead took its lumps.
The Sabers made it 27-6 after Cabel’s pick when Ezra Savea hit Jayce Bantolina with a screen pass that went for a 16-yard score.
Terell Johnson put the game away for Campbell with a 49-yard TD sweep around left end for the 34-6 bulge.
That run put Johnson over the 100-yard mark. The 6-foot 200-pounder finished with 127 yards on 18 carries.
"We wanted to come out in the second half and show that we can run when we want to," Sabers coach Amosa Amosa said. "In the first half, we missed a block here and a block there. We wanted to clean it up in the second half and we knew we had something with (Johnson and May) running it."
Moanalua missed a chance to take a lead with about four minutes left in the first half. Trailing 7-6, Kea Rodriguez’s interception set up Thomas Sheridan’s 40-yard field goal try that went wide left.
So instead of gaining the momentum from that would-be field goal, Na Menehune succumbed to the Sabers’ next drive and swung the game in the hosts’ favor for good.
A 19-yard pass from Savea to Bantolina and a 24-yard May run led to Savea’s 15-yard TD strike to Kona Reiny-Aloy for a 14-6 Campbell lead with 2:04 to go before halftime.
Savea completed 18 of 31 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
