South Korea was honored with a visit from Pope Francis this month. Known as the "People’s Pope," the Pontiff was getting around town in a compact Kia Soul car. Some of the highlights of his 100-hour stay included: a beatification of 124 Korean martyrs by the Holy Father in an outdoor mass Aug. 16 at Gwanghwamun square — the same place where martyrs were tortured and beheaded during the Joseon Dynasty (a beatification is the third of four steps in the canonization process); a meeting with bereaved family members of the Sewol Ferry disaster at which Pope Francis also left a letter of prayer for each of the 10 families of those still missing; and the delivery of his last message to the divided Korea, "Forgive and be united as one people." There are over 5.4 million Catholics in South Korea.
