The two men, ages 31 and 25, were diving with another man around 5:20 p.m. when all three experienced distress. A surfer in the area assisted the other man to shore and alerted lifeguards to the location of the other two.

Suspect in car that hit officer is charged
A 43-year-old man was charged Saturday in connection with a stolen car that knocked down a Honolulu police lieutenant, causing the officer’s firearm to discharge.
Derek Torres, who does not have a local address, called police and gave himself up in Aiea about 6:45 a.m. Saturday. He was arrested on Pali Momi Street for investigation of first-degree attempted murder, police said.
Torres was charged later Saturday with first-degree terroristic threatening, attempted assault and assault of a law enforcement officer.
He is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Police are still looking for a second man who was in the vehicle.
On Aug. 12, a uniformed police lieutenant was on his way to work at the Pearl City station when he noticed a stolen car at the 7-Eleven store on Lehua Avenue and approached it about 12:05 p.m., police said.
The driver reversed out of the stall and struck the officer with the open car door, police said. The officer, who had his weapon out, was knocked to the ground and his handgun accidentally went off, but no one was hit.
The injured officer was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Police did not pursue the fleeing car, but an all-points bulletin was issued. The stolen car was found abandoned that night near the 7-Eleven where the collision occurred.
