Florence advances in Billabong Pro Tahiti
Hawaii’s John John Florence advanced to the fourth round with his victory over Kauai’s Sebastian Zietz in 10- to 12-foot surf at the Billabong Pro Tahiti on Sunday.
Florence posted the highest two-wave heat total of the competition so far, a 19.93, which also included the second 10.00 wave of the Association of Surfing Professionals’ World Championship Tour event.
Zietz notched two 9.00-plus rides to an 18.50 total.
Florence surfs against Brett Simpson and Kai Otton on Monday, conditions permitting.
Ex-UH players Pilares, Daley and Clay cut
Three former UH football players were cut on Sunday, as NFL teams began paring down ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, when rosters must be at 75 players.
Carolina cut UH wide receiver Kealoha Pilares, a fifth-round pick by the Panthers in 2011 who has struggled with injuries.
Atlanta waived former Warriors linebacker Brenden Daley, and Atlanta cut safety Charles Clay. Both players were 2013 seniors at UH who went undrafted.
