1 dead after truck slams into wall in Kalihi
A 56-year-old man died Tuesday after his truck crashed into a wall in Kalihi.
Paramedics took the man to the hospital in extremely critical condition following the crash at about 4:45 a.m. near the Kalihi Transit Center, according to a city Emergency Medical Services report.
Police said the man died at the Queen’s Medical Center.
Police closed Middle Street between North King Street and Kamehameha Highway until about 6:15 a.m. while they investigated.
California man ID’d in apparent drowning
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday identified one of two men in an apparent double drowning off Kahala Beach as Steve Tran, 31, of Santa Ana, Calif.
The second man has not been identified. The Medical Examiner’s Office is awaiting further studies before releasing a cause of death for both men, the office said.
Police said two men, ages 31 and 32, became unresponsive while swimming at a local beach about 6 p.m. Saturday.
Lifeguards reached the men, who were wearing fins, about 500 yards offshore near Hunakai Street, a Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman said. The lifeguards performed CPR on the men, and paramedics took them to the hospital in critical condition.
Police said the men died at the hospital.
A third man was able to make it to shore safely with the help of a surfer.
Teen girl arrested over threats to teacher
Police arrested a 15-year-old girl at a Kalihi school Monday morning after she allegedly threatened her teacher.
The incident occurred at 9 a.m. Monday. Police did not release the name of the school.
Officers arrested the student on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening. She was released pending further investigation and the matter was turned over to the Family Court.
2 suspects sought after man is assaulted
Police are looking for two men following a report of a man being hit in the face in the Alewa Heights area Tuesday morning.
Paramedics treated and took a 21-year-old man in serious condition to the hospital with facial injuries after he was hit in the face at about 6:30 a.m.
The case has been classified by police as an assault.
Inmate who fled work furlough is found
A 27-year-old man is back in prison on Hawaii island after walking away from the Hale Nani work furlough facility Friday.
Kalaikona Fukuhara, who was serving time for burglary, was found in Hilo on Sunday and taken into custody, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree escape and promoting prison contraband.
Fukuhara was returned to the custody of the Department of Public Safety and was being held at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
The case has been turned over to the county prosecutor’s office.
