ST. PAUL, Minn. » Bill Murray, John Lithgow, Kevin Kline and Woody Harrelson can’t all be wrong.
Neither can Faith Hill, Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin.
Nor can Arnold Schwarz-enegger, Jesse Ventura and Lindsay Lohan …
Um, well, how about Peter Jennings, Garrison Keillor, Jon Stewart and the Beach Boys?
All of the above have eaten at Mickey’s Dining Car, one of St. Paul’s most celebrated attractions, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, since 1939.
Located conveniently downtown, Mickey’s has been feeding breakfast, lunch, dinner and night-owl rations faithfully, rain or shine, in brutal snow or blistering heat, to five generations. Its stool-and-counter ambience has made it an attractive movie location, with appearances in "Jingle All the Way" and the three "Mighty Ducks" movies.
And, yes, there’s a jukebox.
The menu sets the culinary tone.
"We at Mickey’s strive to provide delicious, homemade, wholesome and economical meals," the restaurant proclaims. "Our buttermilk pancakes, baked beans, chili, Mulligan stew and bean soup are produced in our own kitchen from our own pre-war recipes. We shred our own potatoes. Our meat comes fresh from a local butcher. We cook our Grade AA extra large shell eggs only in real butter. Our buns and bread arrive fresh daily from our Twin Cities bakery. Our coffee is ground fresh and roasted locally. We use shortening in our fryer without trans-fats."
Breakfast is served any time, and Mickey’s describes its meat and eggs dish as "America’s favorite all-day meal." It includes two fried eggs, homemade hash browns, toast with butter and jelly, and choice of ham, sausage, bacon, hamburger, a 4-ounce New York strip steak, an 8-ounce strip steak or a 6-ounce pork chop.
On a recent trip to St. Paul, I stopped by for lunch and opted for the classic burger on a sesame bun and fries. Quite satisfying for under $10.
But don’t take my word for it.
Just ask Julio Iglesias, Emilio Estevez, Andy Garcia and Liv Tyler.
