Makakilo brush fire about 95% contained
Firefighters resumed battling the brush fire in Makakilo on Sunday.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Kevin Mokulehua said firefighters returned to the site at about 9 a.m. Sunday to battle three main hot spots. As of Sunday the brush fire was 95 percent contained, he said.
Firefighters have been battling the fire since Aug. 22, when two 7-year-old boys playing with a lighter accidentally ignited dry brush off Umena Street.
Firefighters also returned to another brush fire at about 2 p.m. Sunday to contain hot spots. The flare-ups were from a brush fire that occurred Friday in a gulch near the Waikele bunkers.
Mokulehua said the fire did not threaten any houses.
