The 33rd annual Honolulu Century Ride will take place Sunday, with 2,000 riders expected to participate.
The event, held by the Hawaii Bicycling League, is described by organizers to be the biggest cycling event in the state. The ride will start and finish at Kapiolani Park. Organizers recommend participants arrive at 5:30 a.m. or earlier for a 6:15 a.m. start time.
Entertainment at the finish line near the park bandstand will feature the Royal Hawaiian Band and the Small Ensemble of the Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band. Food booths will also be available.
For the first time, event organizers have introduced a youth category, allowing people up to age 17 to participate at a discounted $35 registration fee.
Daniel Alexander, communications director of the Hawaii Bicycling League, said the event is held annually to raise money for education and advocacy for safer roads. The century ride is a family-friendly event for all to participate. "It’s untimed. It’s not a race," Alexander said.
The longest route is the 100-mile route. The halfway point for the route is Swanzy Beach Park in Kaaawa. Participants can also opt for the 20-, 25-, 50- or 75-mile routes.
Special-duty police officers will be at intersection points along the various routes. Aid stations will be located along the routes for bicyclists to refuel with fruit, snacks and cold drinks.
Lane closures will occur around Kapiolani Park as organizers prepare for the event. At 3 a.m., a lane on Kalakaua Avenue between Kapahulu Avenue and Paki Avenue will be closed until 8:30 a.m.
At 6 a.m., the outbound Koko Head-bound lane from the beginning of Kalanianaole Highway to Lunalilo Home Road will be closed until 2:30 p.m. The inbound Ewa-bound lane on the highway from Lunalilo Home Road to the start of the H-1 freeway will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A section of Kahekili Highway between Kaneohe Bay Drive heading toward the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park will be coned to give riders more space because of a narrow shoulder.
