Burton White congratulated Grammy Award-winner Mavis Staples, center, and her sister and backing vocalist Yvonne Staples, after a superb concert Wednesday at the Hawaii Theatre. The sisters are still performing together decades after they gained fame as part of the Staple Singers, who received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Mavis Staples said during the concert that it was thanks to White, the theater’s artistic director and general manager, that she was performing in Hawaii for the first time since 1973.
