Reigning two-time ASP women’s world champion Carissa Moore won her heat at the Cascais Women’s Pro in Portugal on Friday.
Moore jumped on fellow Hawaii surfer Malia Manuel and Paige Hareb of New Zealand in the first two waves and held off a furious comeback by Manuel, who caught a nine-point ride in the final five minutes.
Moore’s 16.70 heat was the highest score of the competition so far. Manuel scored 13.97.
Manuel moved on the beat Laura Enever of Australia 8.20-7.70 in the fourth round and will meet Moore again in the quarterfinals.
"I was a little nervous going into that heat, but ended up having a really good time," Moore told aspworldtour.com. "There are a lot of girls on tour doing airs and progressive moves, and they inspire me."
Moore entered the contest ranked No. 4 in the world, just ahead of Manuel.
Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons holds the top spot, followed by fellow Australians Tyler Wright and Stephanie Gilmore.
