Patacchia nearly perfect in Portugal
Fred Patacchia was Hawaii’s lone winner in the first round of the Cascais Billabong Pro in Portugal on Tuesday.
Patacchia nailed a 9.8 (out of 10) on his second wave to score 13.63 points and beat Ramzi Boukhiam by two points. Hawaii’s Keanu Asing was third in the heat with 11.06. Patacchia moves on to face Yadin Nicol of Australia and Frenchmen Jeremy Flores and Joan Duru in the second round.
Patacchia made three consecutive big turns on his near perfect ride.
No other Hawaii surfer finished higher than third. Torrey Meister and Dusty Payne both took third, while Mason Ho and Sebastian Zietz finished last in their heats. Granger Larson will surf his first-round heat today, surf permitting.
Hawaii Pacific picks up honors
Hawaii Pacific had three players recognized in the Pacific West Conference’s weekly honors on Tuesday.
Eduardo Palacios was named the freshman of the week for men’s soccer, Kelby Boswell was the defender of the week in women’s soccer and Tenika Wentworth was the freshman of the week in women’s volleyball.
Farthing picks up top-5 finish
Hawaii Pacific’s Carly Farthing shot an 82 on both days of the St. Martin’s Invitational at Olympia Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, finishing fifth overall.
The Sharks were fifth as a team, behind UH Hilo’s solid group in third place. St. Martin’s won the event by 30 strokes over Simon Fraser and had the individual winner in Jennifer Liedes, who had a two-day total of 144.
Freshman Andi Igawa led the Vulcans with a 170 and Erin Costes was right behind at 172.
BYUH men lead local rivals in golf
Riley Bunker and Nicolas Herrera each shot a 71 at Olomana Golf Club on Tuesday to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii into the lead after the first day of a tri-match on Tuesday.
Junior Jarin Harada of Chaminade also shot a 71, but the Silverswords trail the Seasiders by six strokes. Hawaii Pacific is in second, two strokes behind BYUH. Jamie Waltmire led all scorers with a 70 for the Sharks.
The final round will be held at Pearl Country Club on Wednesday.
