Bell ringing to mark Navy’s 239th birthday
Navy Region Hawaii will hold a bell ringing ceremony Friday at the World War II Valor in the Pacific Monument at the USS Arizona Visitor Center to mark the Navy’s 239th birthday.
The keynote speaker will be Rear Adm. Willie Metts, director of intelligence at the U.S. Pacific Command. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is open to the public.
The USS Arizona bell will be rung nine times to mark the changing of the watch and the beginning of the Navy’s 240th year.
The Navy was established on Oct. 13, 1775, by the Continental Congress.
In 1972, Adm. Elmo Zumwalt, chief of naval operations, authorized Oct. 13 as the Navy’s birthday to encourage a Navywide celebration of the occasion.
No contest plea made in murder
HILO » One of two men charged with murder in the death of a Hawaiian Acres man in 2012 changed his plea on Tuesday to no contest.
Kawena Krause, 21, will be sentenced Dec. 1 for his role in the death of Dante Peter Gilman, 44, on Dec. 28, 2012, at Gilman’s home.
A plea agreement calls for him to be sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Prosecutors will recommend a 20-year mandatory minimum sentence for the second-degree murder conviction.
Krause’s cousin, Claude Keone Krause, 32, is scheduled for trial in the case Nov. 3, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported.
Gilman, a former competitive surfer, was the son of the late Peter Gilman, a Honolulu Star-Bulletin reporter in the 1950s and author of "Diamond Head," a novel made into a 1963 movie starring Charlton Heston.
Dante Peter Gilman was reported missing Jan. 10, 2013. Police found his body 12 days later on Tree Planting Road off Stainback Highway in Panaewa.
The Krause cousins were linked to the death by a surveillance video taken at Gilman’s home.
According to police, it showed Claude Krause pointing "what appears to be a rifle" at Gilman, and Kawena Krause choking Gilman until he stopped moving.
Gilman’s girlfriend, Alohalani Silva, said last year Gilman feared the Krauses and installed surveillance equipment after they stole a motorcycle from him. He reported the theft, she said, and had an acquaintance confront them.
Prosecutors dropped robbery, burglary, theft and firearms charges against Kawena Krause as part of the plea agreement.
