Last weekend’s Kiahuna Junior Classic was the final tournament for juniors to earn a place in December’s Michelle Wie Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Tournament of Champions at Wailea Emerald.
It was also the last opportunity to earn points toward the 2014 Asia Pacific Junior Cup, coming up Nov. 8-11 at Waikoloa Kings’. The HSJGA has announced Hawaii’s team, which competes against the Japan high school all-stars:
Boys–Kyle Suppa, Shawn Lu, Tyler Munetake, Justin Ngan, Kyosuke Hara, Zackary Kaneshiro, Spencer Dunaway, Justin Williamson, Remington Hirano and Colin Laszlo.
Girls–Rose Huang, Malia Nam, Allysha Mae Mateo, Kaci Masuda, Allisen Corpuz and Mari Nishiura.
Hilton Grand Vacations is sponsoring the Ryder Cup-style event for the eighth year. The first day is a Junior-Am, which helps fund a scholarship program. To play in the Junior Am, contact the HSJGA at 808-532-0559.
Suppa (74–141) and Corpuz (68–143) won the oldest age groups at Kiahuna. Other winners were Evan Kawai (75–146) in boys 13-14 and Catherine Choi (95–184) in girls 7-10.
Locals lead UW to big win
Hawaii’s Eimi Koga and Cyd Okino finished in the top eight to help Washington win its Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational Wednesday at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish.
Tuesday’s first round was canceled because of fog. Koga, a sophomore out of Moanalua, shot 71 that afternoon and 74 Wednesday to tie for second — her best collegiate finish.
She was nine shots behind medalist, and senior teammate, SooBin Kim. Okino (75–147), a senior out of Punahou, tied for eighth.
