No. 4 Seasiders win 11th straight
Senior All-America hitter Shih Ting Chen put down 15 kills and added 19 digs to lead No. 4 Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 27-25, 25-16, 26-24 sweep of Point Loma in a PacWest volleyball match Saturday at Cannon Activities Center.
Sophomore setter Elizabeth Blake Solaita, who played one season at Hawaii as a libero, had three aces to go along with 32 assists as the Seasiders (13-3, 11-0 PacWest) won their 11th in a row and 47th consecutive at home.
Senior middle Erh Fang Hsu was in on eight blocks and freshman libero Ashley Mataele had 13 digs for BYU-Hawaii, which outblocked Point Loma 11-1.
Freshman middle Bethany Mandon led the Sea Lions (12-9, 9-4) with 12 kills.
» Senior hitter Callie Aberle had 13 kills and was in on six blocks to lead Hawaii Hilo to a 25-22, 25-19, 25-21 PacWest volleyball victory over Azusa Pacific on Saturday, snapping the Vulcans’ five-match losing streak.
Sophomore hitter Marley Strand-Nicolaisen added 11 kills for UHH (5-10, 4-8).
Former Rainbow Wahine defensive specialist Kristina Kam had 20 digs for the Cougars (11-9, 7-4). On Friday, Hawaii Pacific (9-8. 7-4) rallied past APU 20-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-5 behind senior opposite Elizabeth Culpepper’s 16 kills.
The Vulcans were coming off Friday’s tough 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 28-26 loss to Dixie State that saw Aberle finish with a match-high 21 kills.
» Former Hawaii outside hitter Michelle Waber put down a match-high 16 kills to lead Cal Baptist over Chaminade 29-27, 26-24, 23-25, 25-12 in a PacWest volleyball match Saturday at McCabe Gym.
Jenny Perry added 13 kills and was in on five blocks for the Lancers (12-7, 8-3 PacWest), who outblocked the Silverswords 13-5. Sophomore hitter Cassie Rushow had 12 kills and three aces for Chaminade (11-11, 4-8).
On Friday, the Silverswords held off Point Loma 25-12, 25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 15-10. Junior hitter Suncica Bakic tied her season high with 14 kills, Rushow also had 14 and sophomore middle Ku‘ulei Lynch added a career-high 11 kills.
Lam in, 2 out in tennis regional
Hawaii’s Carter Lam remained alive in the consolation bracket, while Rainbow Warriors Nils Schuhmann and Marcel Chan were eliminated Saturday at the ITA/USTA Southwest Regional Tennis Championships in Malibu, Calif.
Schuhmann lost in the championship bracket’s Round of 32 to San Diego State’s Marko Goles-Babic, 6-1, 6-4.
Lam defeated San Diego State’s Santiago Cevallos 6-4, 6-1 to advance to Sunday’s Round of 16 in the consolation bracket.
Chan won his second-round consolation match 6-3, 6-0 over Pepperdine’s Alexander Solonin but dropped the third-round match against Cal Poly’s Devin Barber 6-3, 6-4.
Gealer is the lone Wahine standing
Sarah Gealer won two consolation-bracket matches Saturday and will be the only Hawaii women’s tennis player competing at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships in San Diego on Sunday.
Gealer advanced to the quarterfinals when her fourth-round opponent, Lauri Mueller of Loyola Marymount, withdrew due to injury. Gealer then outlasted LMU’s Andrea Cresp 6-4, 1-6, 10-8.
In a main-draw quarterfinal match, second-seeded Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine defeated No. 8 seed Cindy Nguyen of UH 7-5, 6-2.
Rainbow Wahine Martina Kostalova and Rebecca Faltusz both lost their "Lucky Loser" matches.
UH men lose swimming dual meet
The Hawaii men’s swimming and diving team won the final three events of the day, but it was not enough as the Rainbow Warriors lost to Stanford 179-106 at the Avery Aquatic Center in Stanford, Calif.
Hawaii (0-2) took the top four spots in the 100 fly, led by Eduardo Vaz Guimaraes. UH did the same in the 400 IM, with Kacy Johnson holding off three teammates. Victor Goicoechea won the 1,650 free.
Earlier in the meet, UH’s Amund Gismervik won the 3-meter diving event and was second in the 1-meter.
Roller derby for breast cancer awareness
The Double A’s take on the Double D’s in a Pacific Roller Derby scrimmage Saturday, a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
The scrimmage starts at 4 p.m. at The Hideway Club on the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station, Barbers Point. Doors open at 3 p.m. General admission is $10 and includes one beverage. There is no charge for children 12 and under.
