BYU-Hawaii stays at No. 4 in D-II poll
The Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team remained at No. 4 in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 released Monday. The Seasiders (14-3, 11-0 PacWest) have won 11 straight since losing three in a row to the teams ranked ahead of them: No. 1 Tampa, No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth and No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul.
Chen named conference Player of the Week
Shih Ting (Stella) Chen was named Player of the Week after helping her Seasiders to three wins last week. In those three wins, all 3-0 sweeps, the outside hitter averaged 5.56 kills per set.
The outside hitter also rose to No. 2 all-time in career kills after she knocked down 16 kills in Saturday’s three-set victory over Point Loma Nazarene and now sits at 1,618 kills, just 170 behind Yu Chuan Weng for the record.
With the win, BYU-Hawaii has won 47 straight matches at the Cannon Activity Center.
MEN’S GOLF
Vulcans in 11th place after Day 2
The second round of the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational wrapped up on Monday with Hawaii Hilo in 11th place. A round two total of 313 puts Hawaii Hilo with a two-day total of 618 — 34 shots behind leader Nova Southeastern. Dalen Yamauchi shot a 2-over 72 and currently sits in a tie for 14th with his two-day total of 149, 5 over par.
The Invitational concludes on Tuesday at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.
MEN’S SOCCER
Green earns weekly honor
BYU-Hawaii’s Jace Green recorded three points in a 2-1 win over Hawaii Pacific last Friday. He scored the first goal of the match in the ninth minute, then added an assist just two minutes later that proved to be the match winner.
Green has scored a goal in each of his past five matches, while recording a point in the last eight. He is tied for second in the conference in goals (7) and fourth in points (17).
BASKETBALL
Clinic slated for Thursday and Saturday
Chaminade will host the Adidas Coaches Hoops Clinic this week.
The first clinic will be held at Baldwin High School in Wailuku on Thursday. Check-in is at 5 p.m., with the clinic to follow from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The Oahu clinic will be Saturday at McCabe Gym from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. following a 9:30 a.m check in.
Jim Harrick and Dave Odom highlight the clinic’s coaching field. Harrick has 23 years of collegiate coaching experience and was a head coach at four different schools — Pepperdine, UCLA, Rhode Island and Georgia. In 1995, he guided UCLA to the national championship, the Bruins’ first since 1975.
Odom, formerly the head coach at Wake Forest and South Carolina, is the tournament chairman of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
Chaminade men’s coach Eric Bovaird and women’s skipper Bobby Keanini will also serve as clinicians.
