Triple Crown slots on the line at HIC Pro
The HIC Pro, the qualifier for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, begins its holding period Monday off Sunset Beach.
The ASP four-star event with a purse of $85,000 is the final opportunity for pro surfers to secure a slot in the Triple Crown. It features a field of 112, including 58 from Hawaii, as well as surfers from Australia (16), the U.S. mainland (24), Japan (six), Tahiti (two), France (one) and South America (one), plus four wild cards.
The North Shore’s Fred Patacchia is the No. 1 seed for the event that runs through Nov. 10.
Wahine seventh, Leung 17th at invitational
The Hawaii women’s golf team finished seventh in the fourth annual Rainbow Wahine Invitational Thursday at Leilehua Golf Course.
Wahine sophomore Izzy Leung shot a final-round 76 for a three-round total 226, and finished tied for 17th overall.
Hawaii Hilo finished in 14th place, led by Andi Igawa, who tied for 75th. Vanderbilt’s Cindy Ha birdied her last three holes for a final round 68 to win the tournament and lead the Commodores to the team title.
BYUH men win in PacWest soccer
The BYU-Hawaii men’s soccer team allowed only one shot on goal in shutting out Academy of Art 3-0 on Thursday in San Francisco.
The Seasiders led 1-0 at the half after an Urban Knights own goal, and Colby Bauer and Chad Nahoolewa scored in the second half for BYU-Hawaii (6-5-2, 6-1-1 PacWest).
» In an earlier women’s match, BYU-Hawaii (3-10, 2-6 PacWest) fell 1-0 to Academy of Art on a last minute goal.
» The Chaminade men’s soccer team fell 3-1 at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif. Colten Gallt scored for the Silverswords (3-9, 2-6) in the 13th minute.
» In the women’s match, Chaminade (2-8-1, 2-5-1) and Notre Dame de Namur played to a scoreless tie. Silverswords goalkeeper Lauren Ishii (Mililani) made 11 saves to record her third shutout of the year.
HPU women’s volleyball team rolls on
The Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team swept visiting Holy Names 25-14, 25-19, 25-16 at St. Andrew’s Priory on Thursday, its eighth victory in the past 10 matches.
Pomai Recca posted a team-high 13 kills for the Sharks (10-8, 8-4 PacWest). Amanda Moriarty had a match-high 20 digs.
» Fresno Pacific registered 77 kills and outlasted Hawaii Hilo 23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 19-25, 15-12 in a PacWest women’s volleyball match in Fresno, Calif. Callie Aberle had 23 kills for Vulcans (5-11, 4-9).
