Wahine soccer team wins on the road
Hawaii goalkeepers Monk Berger and Erica Young combined on the first shutout of the season and the Rainbow Wahine opened their final road trip of the season with a 1-0 win over UC Irvine on Thursday.
UH senior Hayden Gibson provided the lone goal of the match in the 35th minute and Berger and Young protected the lead as the Wahine ended a four-match skid while knocking the host Anteaters out of contention for a spot in the Big West tournament.
"The kids came out on fire," UH coach Michele Nagamine said. "They wanted to make amends for the last few games."
UH (7-10, 2-5 BWC) closes the season on Sunday at Cal State Northridge (7-10-1, 4-3).
Young played the first half in goal for UH and Berger took over after halftime. Young faced one shot on goal and made the save on a one-on-one opportunity. Berger saved two shots, tipping one over the crossbar.
"We made the call they would both play because they were both deserving and they both need the minutes," Nagamine said. "They both came up huge."
Gibson scored her second goal of the season off an assist from fellow senior Ashley Haruki in the first half and the Wahine held off UC Irvine (6-9-3, 2-4-1) after halftime.
